A Clock

Yes (64)

First Appearance

Update 0.8.0

A Clock is a Redstone-related Item which was added in Update 0.8.0. It displays the positions of the Sun and the Moon.

Clocks are primarily obtained through Crafting. After Update 1.0.4, Clocks can also be Traded for using Emeralds.

Clocks are used to measure time, which is helpful when the Player is not paying attention to the Sun, or when they are currently somewhere where the sky isn't visible.

Clocks only show their time when they are in the Hotbar, in the Players' hand, or as a "Wall Clock" when placed in an Item Frame.

Measuring Time

Time can be measured using Clocks by observing the upper part of it. When it is blue, it is day, whereas when it is black, it is night. The yellow end of the "hand" represents the Sun, and the silver end represents the Moon. Thus, the position of the hand can indicate the position of the Sun in the sky and how close it is to Night. The same is true of the Moon. Time cannot be measured in the Nether or The End.

The Player can only Sleep in a Bed when the clock is at least half-blue and half-black, and when the Player wakes up the colors are reversed.

  • Clocks were one of the few Redstone features added before Update 0.13.0.
  • Clocks were useless in the Creative Inventory until Update 0.10.0, when day/night cycles were added to Creative Mode.
  • Clocks have a similar Crafting recipe to a Compass, except the Iron Ingots are replaced with Gold Ingots.

Sword | Pickaxe | Axe | Shovel | Hoe | Flint and Steel | Shears | Compass | Clock | Carrot on a Stick | Fishing Rod
