First Appearance

Update 0.1.0

Obsidian is a black and dark purple Block. It has an extremely high Blast Resistance, second only to Bedrock. It can only be mined by using a Diamond Pickaxe. It was added in Update 0.1.0.

Obtaining

Obsidian can spawn underground naturally when flowing Water meets a Lava source Block. As Water flows and converts Lava into Obsidian faster than Lava dealing damage, this can be used by the Player with strategic placement of Water blocks to create a safe mining area.

Occasionally, Obsidian occurs naturally in Village blacksmith Chests.

As of Update 1.0, Obsidian can also be found in The End, where the End Crystal towers on the main island is made out of Obsidian.

Crafting

Other Uses

In addition to being used as crafting ingredient, Obsidian can be used to create a Nether Portal, by placing it in a rectangular frame and lighting it with Flint and Steel. The minimum size 4 Blocks wide and 5 Blocks high, but it could be as large as 23 by 23. Note that the corners are not strictly necessary, but are usually included.

Obsidian can also be used in constructions involving Sticky Pistons managing Slime Blocks, as Obsidian will not attach to the Slime Blocks.

Trivia

  • When Obsidian is mined with a Pickaxe other than Diamond, it takes longer to break and doesn't let the Player obtain it.
  • Obsidian can be created when a Nether Portal is spawned in the Nether or the Overworld. This portal can then be mined, providing a renewable source of Obsidian.
  • An Obsidian Block takes about 7-8 seconds to mine with a Diamond Pickaxe.
  • Before Update 0.6.0, the structure created by activating the Nether Reactor was made out of Obsidian, but it was changed to Netherrack in Update 0.6.0.
  • Its blast resistance is 6000. This means TNT and Creepers can't damage it.
    • However, the Wither's explosion and blue skulls can destroy it.
  • Before Update 0.12.1, Obsidian could be only used to protect a structure or a Player from an explosion. It could also be used for decorational purposes.
  • Obsidian is often confused with a Block of Coal although the former has more of a purplish hue.
  • The Player is advised to take caution when mining Obsidian in caves since there is often Lava underneath.
